Since Marchionne is being Italian, with calculated delays on future plans and launches. I'm gonna try to see how the Maserati brand should play its cards in the near future.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , because Jaguar is a small company, with a relative independence, but Maserati can't drop the GT and replace it with the sexy Alfieri.

Because even if Maserati is a small automaker too, it is one of core pylons, Marchionne is basing its "built in Italy", strategy, and they need as many models, as possible to fill those idled Italian plants, and they need to be Italy's Porsche, rather than Italy's Jaguar.
Even FCA themselves are a aware that a slew of cheaper models could dilute Maserati's famed tridente. In my opinion, emblema de Maserati, won't be diluted as long as the cheaper cars behave like Maseratis. The Quattroporte gained the respect of the fans for it's dramatic design and because it isn't sedating the people in it, the way an S Class, A8 or LS are doing. The Ghibli seems to be a full righted member of the Maserati famiglia. The Levante will need to make circles around a Range Rover or X5, and be able to keep up with the Porsche Cayenne and the future Lambo crossover, that would make it Maserati.
A Porsche executive said the ideal number of models for a Porsche or Maserati type brand, is 7. Because with the lifespan of a car in this segment being 7-8 years, they can launch something new every year. Obviously Porsche itself it isn't currently offering 7 distinct models, but let's focus on Maserati. They have GT, Quattroporte, Ghibli and they will have Levante and Alfieri. 5 models.
Going down is pretty hard to justify since, Alfa Romeo will need space for it's own lineup. Going up, seems more likely, as Ferrari is reducing the number of cars it produces, to grow exclusivity, Maserati can jump in, for those models. I'm sure that Ferrari could've sold double the number of the LaFerrari production, so why not offer the rich playboys who were too slow in writing Ferrari a check for the car, a second chance, with a Maserati version.
And if VAG doesn't have a problem with selling the R8, Huracan, and the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I'm sure that FCA won't have a problem with selling a Ferrari based, MR Maserati, but with different design and personality.
So come on Marchionne, you know that Maserati can be a lot more than Ferrari's pet.
Let it shine.
